Day 17: Bicycling Advocacy and Community

BikeABQ

BikeABQ is an Albuquerque nonprofit working to make bicycling a safe, enjoyable, and convenient transportation option for everyone. The organization was founded in 1999 to advocate for safer streets, better bike infrastructure, improved trails, and policies that protect cyclists while also providing education, community events, and outreach. Its vision is an inclusive bicycling culture where people of all ages and abilities have the infrastructure and resources to ride safely and confidently for transportation, recreation, or everyday life.

Impact

  • Has advocated for dozens of bike, traffic-safety, infrastructure, trail, and legislative projects across Albuquerque and New Mexico

  • Distributed thousands of Albuquerque bike maps through local businesses and organizations

  • Advocates directly with city officials and policymakers on safer, more connected streets

NM NICA

The New Mexico Interscholastic Cycling League (NM NICA) uses mountain biking to help young people build confidence, character, fitness, and community. Open to middle and high school students across New Mexico, the league emphasizes that there are no tryouts and no bench—everyone rides and everyone has a place. Its core values are fun, inclusivity, equity, respect, and community, while also teaching young riders to be responsible trail users and environmental stewards.

Impact

  • More than a dozen teams currently participate across New Mexico

  • Serves middle and high school students statewide

  • Hosts five race and event weekends during the 2026 season

  • Provides scholarship assistance to help remove financial barriers for student-athletes and coaches

The Cycle Effect

The Cycle Effect empowers girls and women through mountain biking, mentorship, and outdoor experiences that build confidence, belonging, leadership, and healthy habits. In Mesa County, the program helps riders connect with the outdoors and the Grand Valley community while removing financial barriers by providing bikes, gear, transportation, low-cost programming, and scholarships.

Impact

  • The Girls Mountain Bike Program has helped more than 1,000 young riders discover their potential on and off the bike

  • 73% of participants identify as Latina and/or BIPOC

  • 100% of athletes who applied for financial assistance received a scholarship, with more than $33,000 in scholarships awarded
